About Scepter Scepter is the software side of the ADL-G6. It creates and manages the codes and crypto you need for your communications. Scepter is designed to run on a Tails USB stick with an encrypted Persistent Storage that has the Persistent Folder and Dotfiles features turned on. Tails download and installation: https://tails.net/install/index.en.html Instructions for configuring Persistent Storage: https://tails.net/doc/persistent_storage/configure/index.en.html Scepter does not need an internet connection to run, and the recommended practice is to use it on an air-gapped system. The setup script takes this into account and consists of two steps, only one of which needs internet access, and that one can be done from a computer that is not your Tails system. 1. Downloading the necessary files and checking their hashes and signatures. 2. Installing the downloaded files onto your Tails system. Splitting the installation into two steps achieves two goals. 1. Your Tails system is never connected to the internet. 2. You have a backup of the installation files, should you ever need to recover and reinstall your system. Installation To set up your Tails USB stick, follow these instructions. 1. Read the Tails installation and Persistent Storage instructions first. Tails download and install -- https://tails.net/install/index.en.html Persistent Storage -- https://tails.net/doc/persistent_storage/configure/index.en.html 2. Install Tails and set up the encrypted Persistent Storage following those instructions. Turn on both the Persistent Folder and the Dotfiles features. Scepter is installed in the Persistent Folder, and its menu items are installed through Dotfiles. 3. Download the setup.zip file from https://www.partisanlabs.com/wp-content/uploads/adl-g6/setup.zip and the signing key from https://www.partisanlabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/publickey.support-at-partisanlabs.com.asc In a Linux console window, unzip the file and check its signature against the key. For instructions on how to do that, see: https://www.linuxbabe.com/security/verify-pgp-signature-software-downloads-linux 4. Once the signature has been verified, run the first step of the setup script in the same console window: $ bash setup.sh download This downloads the needed files, checks their SHA-256 hashes and signatures, and saves them to the location you specified. The would usually be a formatted USB stick (not your Tails USB stick). It is used in the next steps, after Tails has started. The setup script is copied to it as well. 5. Start Tails from your Tails USB stick and unlock the Persistent Storage. 6. Insert the download USB stick from step 4. 7. In the Files program, go to the download USB stick, right-click in its folder and choose 'Open in Console'. 8. In the console window, type: $ bash setup.sh install $(pwd) ~/Persistent/scepter 9. The setup script then starts the graphical installer. - On the installation folder page, the installer warns that the folder already exists. That's OK: the setup script created it earlier. - On the page that lists what to install, leave Menu entries ticked. It adds Scepter, Scepter Help and the other menu items to the applications menu. Without it, none of these appear in the menu. 10. When the installer has finished, restart Tails so that the menu items are loaded. Keep the download USB stick with the installation files in a safe place. That's it. The next step is to read the Help (available in the applications menu) and to open the example CEOIs from File > Recent Files. If you decide you want to purchase a license, go to the product page at https://www.partisanlabs.com/product/adl-g6/ and select the license-only option. Then, in Scepter, go to the Help menu and select 'License...', enter the requested data and send it to license@partisanlabs.com. Make sure you include your order number in the email you send with the license request, or your order cannot be completed. Keep in mind that the license is tied to the ID of the USB stick, so make sure you have it set up before requesting the license, so that it is tied to the correct device. When you generate the license request please remove any USB sticks other than your Tails USB Stick - it makes the licensing process easier. Thanks for reading this far, Sprocket PartisanLabs.com
